Pruning Fruit Trees in Winter (Timelapse

Video Transcript of Pruning Fruit Trees in Winter

It's the start of winter it's a
beautiful sunny day it's a great time to
be in the garden.
so firstly it warms up
your body and you feel great and it just
makes the day feel better if you're
outside doing something it's also a
really good time to get on top of all
those jobs that have been neglected
through the year so I always say here in
the subtropics we have two seasons we
have an in control season which is
autumn and winter when you get things
under control and we have an out of
control season which is spring and
summer which is the growing season when
we get a lot of rain and it's very hard
to keep up on the maintenance so here's
a pretty good example of something
that's got out of control this is a
citron citrus and you can see the
rootstock are just taking over the tree
and if we leave this like this these
root stock are actually going to
dominate the plant and we risk losing
our graft and our Citron tree dying and
what we're going to get left with is a
Trifoliata so this is the Trifoliata
which is the root stock that our Citron
is grafted onto and it's a very thorny
plant we choose this as a root stock
because it's Hardy to heavy wet soils
it's cold hardy so it does better in
cooler conditions and it's a really
vigorous plant so it's perfect to graft
citrus onto but we do need to make sure
we cut off all the suckers and as you
can see in that out-of-control season
this has been neglected so we're going
to get it back under control today so
what we need is some tools good pair of
gardening gloves to protect my hands
I've got a pruning saw and I've got some
cutters and I've got my secretaries
which are always on my hip so you can't
go wrong maintain your tools keep them nice and sharp
we're ready to tackle this job
so here we have our same Citron or
Buddhas Hand tree as it's also called
after we've taken the red stock out and
you can see what a completely different
looking plant it is so I've got my pile
of rootstock behind me and it was nearly
the same volume as that tree but the
easiest way to do it is cut the top off
and that way it gets all the deadly
spikes from your head height and it
makes them easier to actually take from
the bottom or weave your way out of the
existing tree because you don't want to
damage your plant so what we can do now
is we can do a bit of pruning a bit of
shaping to this plant and then in a
couple of weeks time once the weather
starts to warm up we're going to
fertilize it so you're not going to
fertilize it in the dead of winter but
as soon as spring starts to show you're
going to give this tree a good complete
fertilizer so balanced NPK fertilizer
they're heavy feeders and they love it
so that's how to deal with your rootstock
starting get your trees back under
control
in the winter when you have some time
and you want to be outside getting warm
in the garden

Wood Apple Fruit Trees

Wood Apple Fruit Tree vs Avocado
Wood Apples are everywhere In Sri Lanka and the fruit is often made into juices. Tasting sweet yet with a citrus acidic flavour and a very fragrant smell when ripe. Not very pretty to look at but then again either are black sapotes. Looks aren't everything when it comes to fruit. We do not grow wood apples at Daleys Fruit Tree Nursery but maybe...one day. We are getting much more adventurous in Australia aren't we :)

Persimmon Fruit Trees - Choose Astringent or Non Astringent?

Persimmon Fruit Trees - Astringent or Non Astringent
Can you write in the comments "Astringent" or "Non Astringent"  so we can see which ones you like best?

If i had to choose I enjoy Astringent Persimmons. The Fruit must be perfectly ripe and almost like Jelly before you can eat it. If you get the timing wrong you will be spitting it out for 1 minute and the sandpaper taste lingers for 5 minutes. But when they are perfectly ripe they are amazing, will stop you from thinking about everything else and just enjoy the moment. Granted eating them is impractical they can fall apart and are sticky and gooey and there is only a very small window where you can eat them but the taste is amazing. Transporting them when they are ready to eat this can be difficult. When growing your own you can control some of these problems.

Non Astringent persimmons however are practical, easy to transport and can be eaten like an apple and even when hard they still taste good.

Blueberry Plant Pollination Chart - Which Blueberry variety is right for my climate?

Blueberry Plants Pollination Chart

How many Blueberries Plants do I need? Answer: 2 or more is going to maximise pollination and give you more berries. Many varieties can pollinate themselves ( See the yellow star in the picture for these varieties ) but a fruit this tasty yet expensive in shops is well worth growing in pots or in the ground and can be very rewarding. 2 or more will give better fruit set just as long as they can pollinate each other or have a green tick in this chart.

Which varieties will suit? Are you A) Subtropical, B) Warm Temperate - Subtropical or C) Cool Temperate? After you put yourself in one of these categories use the chart to narrow down the varieties to choose from. For example are you in Sunny Coastal NSW and therefore Subtropical. Then Temperate varieties like Blue Rose or Denise are not for you but Sharpblue and Biloxi are.

Dwarf Plum Gulf Gold Fruit Tree for Sale

Dwarf Plum - Gulf Gold Fruit Tree is our favourite of all the stone fruit. Yes we know it's a big call. It is Low Chill, (350 Chill Hours) excellent juicy flavour and doesn't seem to attract as many fruit fly as other varieties and fills the branches when it crops. Dwarf Gulf Golds can fruit by themselves but to get a better crop you can match them with a Gulf Ruby Plum Tree. We can't say enough good things about this variety and have done lots of videos on it over the years.

Wampee Fruit Trees for Sale

Wampee Fruit Trees for sale
Wampee Fruit Trees are for sale at Daleys Fruit Tree Nursery

Wampee Fruit Trees are subtropical and can set fruit by themselves ( Self Pollinating ). They grow up to handle some frost and are easily kept around 2m with cincturing and pruning. In ideal conditions they can mature up to 5m after many years. Originally from China the fruit is highly regarded. I would say the taste and texture is a mix between a grape and a lychee but with stronger earthy flavours.

Transcript from Papaya Broad Leaf
Now look at this beautiful thing. This is what we call a broad leaf papaya and it's name for these really beautiful large leaves. They get bigger than this so this is just a modest example of the leaves and it's quite a spectacular looking plant and it has these really lovely torpedo shaped red fruits which like other red papayas are really delicious great in fruit salads, great eaten fresh just as they are, so this is perfect and we're going to take it back to the kitchen and cut it up and show you what it looks like inside. So if you wanna grow one of these in your garden what do you need. Well firstly you need a warm, really well drained position so they like a nice sunny spot but they also like protection from extremes so extreme, hot afternoon sun, windy conditions they're not going to like. So if you can give them a nice sheltered protected spot and perfect drainage, mound up your planting site to improve your drainage and you can also plant them up against a wall which will give them a bit of reflective heat if you are in a  cool climate like down near Sydney. Ideally they are going to like a subtropical or tropical climate they are going to thrive and you'll be picking these beautiful fruits in about 18 months.

Grafted Soursop Fruit Trees Taste & Growing in Subtropical Australia NSW

Soursop Fruit Trees
Soursops are a Tropical Fruit Tree and oh so very sensitive to frosts. We do have a grafted variety called "Grafted Kyogle Soursop Tree" which we have established in our subtropical climate and have them fruiting even though it is a marginal climate for Soursop Trees. We also discuss the taste.

Grafted Soursop Fruit Trees variety Kyogle are available for sale at Daleys Fruit Tree Nursery. You can buy Soursop Fruit Trees here:

The video at the end of this clip is the Assassin Bug Video which you can watch here:

Transcript of Soursop Video

Very lemony, Yeah Yum, But not sour like a Lemon, No, not sour, sweet lemony taste, Lemonade, Little Seeds, Tiny Seeds. Yum. This is the Soursop and we're growing this in Kyogle so this is a really tropical fruit and Kyogle is very subtropical so we get in Winter we get to about 5 degrees where we are growing this and you do need a frost free site so they will not tolerate any frost and even the 5 degrees that we get in the Winter is a bit of a challenge we get with young trees so make sure you protect them until they are really well established but once you get them going and this particular variety is a grafted Kyogle you will get a really good crop on them so we've got quite a few fruit coming on and they're just starting to ripen up so it is possible to grow tropical fruits in marginal climates if you take care especially when they're young. Protect them from the cold at all costs until their well established. Roff.

R2E2 Mango Tree in Australia is great for cold climates Seedling vs Grafted

We show you just how large the R2E2 mango tree is and we talk about the seedling and grafted mango tree selections. The r2e2 is actually very hardy once established and is a great choice for cold marginal climates in Australia. This is for the seedling r2e2 and not the grafted r2e2. If you are in a subtropical to tropical climate best to get a grafted variety if your climate is cold and marginal than best to get a seedling. You will still need to protect it until it is at least 3m tall.

Now these great big Mangoes are the R2E2 mango and they are one of the largest of the Mango Fruits. They have this beautiful coloured fruit it's got a good flavour. We grow these as a grafted plant and we also grow them as seedlings. So if you have a seed grown mango tree some of them will be grown true to type but some of them aren't going to be grown true to type so you are going to get some seedling variations as we say. But they are a really fabulous tree it's quite a large tree give it plenty of space. It's going to grow more than 6m so be prepared to have a big tree in your backyard. But they are a lovely shady evergreen tree as well so a great tree to have in your backyard if you have the space. That's a beautiful tree beautiful fruit. The R2E2's are one of the best varieties to grow if you are in a marginal climate so if you live in South Australia or Victoria or south of Sydney and you want to try growing a Mango the R2E2 is one of the best choices to try. It's a bit hardier than the others. So although we can't promise you success if you're in a frost free location and you can protect your tree for the first few years until it's about 3m tall or so you are going to have a good chance of getting Mango fruits. So you might find that you have good Seasons and bad Seasons and that's pretty much Weather dependant. So you haven't got a great deal of control on that it's just something you have to take with growing Mangoes. But worth trying if you want to try growing Mangoes in a difficult Mango growing climate. So like all Mangoes best suited to the Tropics and the Subtropics. Give them a frost free location, good drainage, full Sun and you will be cropping Mangoes like this off a Seedling tree in about 6 years and off a Grafted plant in about 3.

Dwarf Mango Tree - The Purple Irwin Fruit Tree

This Dwarf Mango Tree is the Irwin Mango. It colours up to be purple and tastes delicious and isn't stringy to eat. We show you how this 20 year old tree is half the size of normal bowens and give tips on keeping it within 2m as pruning the wrong way will stop next years crop.‬

Dwarf Mango Fruit Tree - Purple Irwin

Transcript

This gorgeous mango is the Irwin Mango. And it's got this lovely purple skin to it so these are ready to pick and we will ripen them off the tree and they will get a lovely colouring of oranges and red as well as this lovely purple so they're really attractive fruit with beautiful smooth flesh and they
don't have any fibre and they are only a small tree so this tree is about 4m tall and it was planted in this orchard at the same time as the other mangoes which are nearly twice as big so it shows you it's less vigorous and much smaller. If you wanted to keep it to about 2m you would need to prune your tree back every few years but just keep in mind that because the mangoes come on the end of the growth you are going to cut your crop off so if you do prune your mangoes back be prepared to lose the fruit for a season. This has got a great crop on it this year and having a good crop of mangoes is all weather dependent so if you have a nice hot dry Spring you will have a great crop of mangoes.

Strawberry Guava Fruit Tree for Sale - Golf Ball sized Red Fruit

Strawberry Guava Fruit Tree for Sale
Our strawberry guava fruit tree has golf ball sized red guavas that taste like strawberries or the typical taste that we expect when eating something red. The seeds skin and flesh are all edible. Not the biggest fruit of the guava varieties but you get this one because of the great crop, lovely taste and small size of the shrub in limited spaced backyards. They grow fastest in tropical climates where they can be invasive due to perfect conditions and birds spreading the seeds so best to be responsible and net the fruit from birds and fruit fly. However they are very versatile where they can even handle a frost when grown at altitude or in warm temperate to subtropical climates where they won't be invasive. You can even roast and grind the seeds as a coffee substitute.

Star Apple Fruit Tree for Sale - Notice the shape

Star Apple Fruit Tree for Sale

Notice the shape when you cut open the fruit. This is a star apple fruit tree and in the right conditions can grow 6-8m and the first thing that people notice from the tree is the large leaves which have a striking contrast between the full green top and browning underneath. A great dense feature tree even without fruit. It doesn't like temperate climates but can grow quite well in subtropical to tropical climates and can be kept quite small in pots. The fruit colour may be purple as in this picture or green.

Planting Mango Seedlines to be used as Rootstocks for Grafted Mango Fruit Trees

We are excited getting our mango seeds down for the season. These seeds will later be used as rootstocks for grafted mango fruit trees

I have noticed in the fresh juice stores just this month the Acerola cherry as a new ingredient. Word of its high vitamin C and other health benefits are making it to OZ finally. 180mL of Acerola = 14L of orange juice in vitamin C. We use the variety Florida sweet as we find it has a more cherry like flavour than other more sour varieties. It is also commonly used in the Japanese practice of bonsai so great for small pots or if grown in the ground it can get 2-4 metres in good conditions. If you don't have long cold winters then the subtropical Acerola Florida sweet cherry fruit tree is worth a try. Self pollinating so you only need one.
