So fruit fly is an example of a bad bug

they will just crucify your fruit they

infect it with maggots they make it go

off they ruin a beautiful crop so we

actually use lures so we're not spraying

our trees we're not using toxic poison

we're just putting out a tiny pheromone

bait and what that does is that attracts

the fruit fly into this trap and we trap

the fruit fly in there so one way you

can control your fruit fly is to net

your trees so you actually eliminate the

fruit fly from getting to your fruit

which is a great organic way of doing it

and another way is to use lure bait so

get some pheromone lures there are

different products on the market

you can make your own trap just plastic

bottle with some holes in it put a bit

of that lure in there and attract those

fruit fly to your bait and you'll help

to reduce the numbers in your orchard

So if you want to grow fruit like this in your home garden.
We have got this in an exclusion orchard and Loquats
can be prone to fruit fly and birds love them, bats love them
So they can also seed around in the bush so what you
need is a fruit fly exclusion net and what this does is it
stops the fruit fly from infecting your fruit and it also
means that your the one that is going to be eating
all this fruit so if you wanna be picking and eating
beautiful fruits like this it's a good idea to get yourself
a fruit fly exclusion net and net your tree.
So you can keep your tree compact by cincturing and
by pruning so when this tree finishes cropping
we're going to cut it back hard.
We will actually reduce the size of this tree by about
half and let it regrow.

When setting up an exclusion orchard that is is fully netted in to keep fruit fly out. You do however need pollination and that is where you can get a native Australian Bee called Trigona. They are a stingless bee which do a great job pollinating.

The start of Spring means that the temperature is starting to warm up, the days are getting longer and the fruit fly are gathering their troops.

So the start of Spring is a great time to develop a fruit fly control strategy. There is a whole range of organic methods through the Wild May Fruit Fly Control Systems but you need to get onto it early and stop them breeding up. The other method is exclusion netting where you place a special fruit fly net over your fruit before they get stung by fruit fly that have bread up and become rampant.

Beating the Fruit Flies

I have picked my first perfect nectarines, with no fruit fly grubs in them and no beak marks from anything wanting to test the fruit first. My first two fruits to come out of the bags are perfect and twice the size of the fruits that the king parrots are feeding on. The parrots are daily visitors to my tree and have not yet touched any of the fruits in the bags, they are happy at the top of the tree while my bagged fruits are ripening below them.

With the release of an organic control method for fruit fly, I have been waiting for Spring to run a trial in our orchard. Early results are very promising with fruit fly counts in the Wild May traps reducing significantly each week. We have been using Naturalure each week sprayed as a bait randomly on lower leaves of some of the orchard trees. A control at Kath's orchard using only Wild May has shown an increased count of fruit fly each week in the traps. The real test will be when the early stone fruit ripen next month. It is the start of the fruit fly season and this year I am determined to pick some tree ripened maggot free nectarines. I have a fruit fly trap in my nectarine with the organic fruit fly attractant called Wild May in it; this traps the male flies and is an indication of how active the flies are. I have been trapping flies for the past few weeks. Now that my flowers are forming fruits I have been bagging the fruits with fruit fly exclusion bags, these are made from waxed paper and are available in different sizes for different fruits. It is also the time to begin spraying the other organic product eco-naturalure this attracts and kills both the male and female flies. All I have to hope for now is that the birds realize that the big fat juicy ripe nectarines are for me and not them.
