Kalamata Olive

A favourite in the Mediterranean diet, Olives make an exquisite accompaniment to dairy foods, breads, fruits, relishes and alcoholic drinks. Olive trees are attractive, hardy trees. Well suited to hot summers and cool winters, some varieties have now shown promise in higher summer rainfall areas with low chill. They can survive on relatively poor neutral pH soils as long as they are well drained. They prefer slightly alkaline soils to slightly acid soils. Of course, fruit quality is enhance by healthy, fertile soils. Fruit grown in higher rainfall areas is well suited to pickling, but high fruit moisture content can make oil extraction more difficult. Some drying may be helpful, or reductions in irrigation and/or exclusion of rain falling on the rootzone may help. The following multipurpose olives are well suited to home growing. Those with lower chill requirements have this attribute noted.

The Kalamata fruit is juicy and sweet and have a unique torpedo shape and split in the skin. The most popular olive in Australia, they are ideal for use in cooking or as an olive to eat alone. Suggested cross-pollinators are Frantoio and Koroneiki #daleysfruit #daleysnursery #olivetree #kalamataolive #backyardgarden

Kiwifruit 🥝

Kiwifruits grow on a vigorous and long lived deciduous vine. Kiwifruit is a great tasting, highly nutritious treat. To eat, cut the fruit in half, then scoop the delicious flesh right out of the skin. They can be added to fruit salads and desserts as well as savoury dishes, they go particularly well with avocados, fish, chicken and prawns. We have a couple of varieties available.

Bruno - Large elongated fruit. Dark brown skin with dense, short, bristly hairs. Light-green flesh of good flavour. Ripens early May. Vigorous and productive with a relatively low chilling requirement

Hayward - The most popular commercial kiwifruit variety. Excellent quality and size, but does require a higher chill requirement than most other varieties. The Chieftain Male is the superior pollinator for these and the Kiwifruit Male is an alternative pollinator

Dexter - Fruit is similar to Hayward only slightly more elongated. Relatively low chill requirement, well adapted to warmer winter areas. Originated in Queensland as a seedling of Hayward.

The ever loved - Cherry 🍒

Cherry Trees are large and long lived. The juicy, succulent fruits are loved by many, but they can only be grown in areas that receive a cool to cold winter as they will need 300 - 1400 hours of chill depending on the variety. Many species break bud and flower in early spring, so they can be susceptible to late frosts and are best not planted in frosty pockets. Some varieties will require cross pollination, but our varieties here at Daley's are all self fertile 🍒 #daleysfruit #cherry #daleysnursery
