Buy Scionwood from Daleys Nursery to Graft in Your Backyard

We have a new list of Scion wood products here at Daleys!

Get notified when our scionwoods are available for sale

Scion wood is the horticultural term for the wood being grafted onto a rootstock, generally rootstocks are seedlings, maybe a year old, and a matching thickness for the scion wood. Scions are collected from a mature branch from the selected variety. Grafting is one technique used to propagate known varieties of fruit and nut trees, the offspring tree will produce fruit that is identical to the parent tree. It will also start to fruit withing 2-3 years, where as seedlings may take up to 8 years to mature to fruiting age.

Scions can also be grafted onto existing mature trees, which gives you the opportunity to create multi-grafts or enrich your pollination potential with a male branch on a female tree.

Our Shoshoni (B) scionwood will be available in August, for example. and can be grafted onto our pecan seedling products, Apache or Riverside, or as a multi-graft onto one of our other varieties. The video linked below shows Kath, our favourite YouTube host, demonstrating how easy it is to create a multi-grafted citrus tree.

All you need to graft your first plants are a sharp grafting knife, some florists tape or parafilm, your rootstock, and your scion wood.

Scion wood will be available to buy soon on our website, with the Shoshoni Pecan wood coming available in August. We have a special discount of 20% for buying 5 or more scions, and we want to encourage everybody to have a go, it's quite addictive once you start. Our other varieties will be coming available soon, so jump over to our website and search the hashtag #ScionWood to see what is on offer. Don't forget to sign up for our notifications so you can be among the first to each variety as they come up, and feel free to drop a comment or message us if you think we need to expand our range or want to recommend anything in particular.

Making Potting Mix at Home and in a Nursery.

Video: Making your own potting mix
Video Transcript
We're often asked about our potting mix
we make our premium potting mix here at
Daley's nursery
Keep in mind that we do make
different mixes for specific plants so
I'm just going to show you a general
potting mix that you can also make in
your garden to pot up your beautiful
fruit trees and any other plants that
you're growing in containers so firstly
we start with basic ingredients and we
buy ours in bulk of course so this is
Coir and you can buy it in blocks like
this it's dried out it's pressed
together and it's quite compact so what
you need to do when you get your block
of Coir is to wet it down so you can pop
this in a wheelbarrow put in about ten
litres of water twenty litres of water
and it expands so you can see how much
it expands here so this is one block
once it's expanded so we actually put a
little sprinkler over lots of blocks of
koi and we wet them all down together so
we're ready to mix our potting mix now
as soon as you move this block it's
going to break up so I've got one here
that we've just moved over and you can
see it just becomes like a powder so
this is one of the basic ingredients of
our potting mix now next to us here
we've got composted pine bark and this
is just medium pines of composted pine
bark and it's the other main fundamental
ingredient in our potting mix and we're
going to actually mix these together so
what we do here at the nursery is we mix
about one-third of Coir to two-thirds of
pine bark we use a tractor and a scoop
and we actually put them in a big old
cement mixer so they get fed into this
chute we mix it all up with fertiliser
so we add slow-release fertiliser gypsum
we add Nutrimin and then we feed it up
this chute into our potting machine once
it's all really well mixed and then the
potting machine feeds the Potters to pot
up the plants so I'll show you that next
so this fabulous machine is our potting
machine and this is where we pot up the
majority of our plants here at Daley's
nursery
so it's a two-person operation and we'll
show you how it works but basically when
you turn it on it feeds out the potting
mix and people pot up here it's a really
fast and efficient way of potting up
plants
so if you want to make your own potting
mix at home you're going to need a
wheelbarrow some basic ingredients some
coir some pine bark if you can get it or
you might want to just use a bag of
premium grade potting mix so that's
going to be similar and it's already
going to have the fertilizer if you're
using plain pine bark you're going to
need some slow-release fertiliser so
we've got a couple of cups of Osmocote
and Nutricote coat these are slow-release
and they're going to last about eight to
twelve months so mix it all up in your
wheelbarrow
sprinkling my slow-release fertiliser so
I've got about two cups
and then mix it all through.
so you can see that the
fertiliser is sort of nicely spread
through the mix you can see the Coir is
pretty much broken up and I've got a
really beautiful mix of ingredients so
this is excellent we're going to use
this to pot up some of our beautiful

fruit trees

Pruning Fruit Trees in Winter (Timelapse

Video Transcript of Pruning Fruit Trees in Winter

It's the start of winter it's a
beautiful sunny day it's a great time to
be in the garden.
so firstly it warms up
your body and you feel great and it just
makes the day feel better if you're
outside doing something it's also a
really good time to get on top of all
those jobs that have been neglected
through the year so I always say here in
the subtropics we have two seasons we
have an in control season which is
autumn and winter when you get things
under control and we have an out of
control season which is spring and
summer which is the growing season when
we get a lot of rain and it's very hard
to keep up on the maintenance so here's
a pretty good example of something
that's got out of control this is a
citron citrus and you can see the
rootstock are just taking over the tree
and if we leave this like this these
root stock are actually going to
dominate the plant and we risk losing
our graft and our Citron tree dying and
what we're going to get left with is a
Trifoliata so this is the Trifoliata
which is the root stock that our Citron
is grafted onto and it's a very thorny
plant we choose this as a root stock
because it's Hardy to heavy wet soils
it's cold hardy so it does better in
cooler conditions and it's a really
vigorous plant so it's perfect to graft
citrus onto but we do need to make sure
we cut off all the suckers and as you
can see in that out-of-control season
this has been neglected so we're going
to get it back under control today so
what we need is some tools good pair of
gardening gloves to protect my hands
I've got a pruning saw and I've got some
cutters and I've got my secretaries
which are always on my hip so you can't
go wrong maintain your tools keep them nice and sharp
we're ready to tackle this job
so here we have our same Citron or
Buddhas Hand tree as it's also called
after we've taken the red stock out and
you can see what a completely different
looking plant it is so I've got my pile
of rootstock behind me and it was nearly
the same volume as that tree but the
easiest way to do it is cut the top off
and that way it gets all the deadly
spikes from your head height and it
makes them easier to actually take from
the bottom or weave your way out of the
existing tree because you don't want to
damage your plant so what we can do now
is we can do a bit of pruning a bit of
shaping to this plant and then in a
couple of weeks time once the weather
starts to warm up we're going to
fertilize it so you're not going to
fertilize it in the dead of winter but
as soon as spring starts to show you're
going to give this tree a good complete
fertilizer so balanced NPK fertilizer
they're heavy feeders and they love it
so that's how to deal with your rootstock
starting get your trees back under
control
in the winter when you have some time
and you want to be outside getting warm
in the garden

Growing Fruit Trees - General Guide

This guide is general in nature but this applies to most of the fruit trees we sell. In order to grow fruit successfully you tree will require the following

    • A full sun position
    • Free draining soil - if you have heavy soil, mound your planting site with compost and good quality garden soil before planting, you can work Gypsum into the hole to break up clay.
    • 6-7 ideal pH for most plants
    • Regular applications of a balanced NPK fertilizer during the growing season as directed, foliar sprays of liquid fertilizer will also be beneficial during the warmer months. Choose an organic fertilizer if you can.
    • Regular and even moisture will result in the best fruit.
    • Maintain a weed free area around your tree
    • Liberally apply compost around your fruit trees and mulch them well with an organic mulch, this can be your own lawn clippings. This will help to retain moisture and reduce weed competition, be sure to keep away from the trunk of your tree.
    • Potted fruit trees will require a pot at least 25- 35 litres in size and always use good quality potting mix in pots, feed and water regularly. Wetting agent can be very helpful to ensure the mix is penetrated.
    • Remove all the flowers from young trees for the first two years so your tree has a chance to establish into a strong and healthy plant before you leave the fruit to mature
    • Maintain all grafted plants by removing any suckers from below the graft as they appear.

Advanced Freight Options: Which Freight Company should you Choose?

Summary of page: Choose the delivery company that you know and trust.
Do you know your courier companies driver?
Is one company quicker or more careful?

    The difference between each carrier

Aramex: is usually a good option to urban and built up addresses. But you may be required to pickup from their closest depot if not in their direct delivery zones. This is how they offer a cheaper price. If you have seen their vans in your street this is the positive sign they service your home.
Couriers Please is usually the cheapest option but the delivery can take a little longer. Remote Customers and first time users please be aware: Couriers please often works with Australia post so they will deliver to the closest depot to your address and then they will onforward ( pass it on to ) Australia Post who will then either deliver it to you or leave it in the Australia Post office for you to pick up there. You need to expect this to happen if you have not seen a couriers please van delivery in your area.
Australia Post Is the only courier that allows PO BOX, PARCEL LOCKER, PARCEL COLLECT etc.. Is tried and tested but often leaves plants at their post office regardless of the delivery instructions to leave at your address. It all depends on your local postman if they usually deliver to your home you can expect this parcel to be delivered in the usual way as well. The max parcel size is 90cm so plants are always cut back to this size unlike the other courier companies.
Startrack - is usually more expensive but they do more remote regions. They do however have a close relationship with Australia Post and often use their Post offices.

    Which one should you choose

Choose the courier company that you have used before and are happy with their service. If you choose the cheapest one please understand there may be delays especially if you live in a remote area.

    Priority and Express Orders

For orders that are urgent we offer 2 services. Priority and/or express. Please understand that these are not overnight services.

Priority: When choosing a Priority service it means that your order goes straight to the front of the queue and is usually dispatched within 1 business day^ (^sometimes more in busy times, ^Dispatch is not done on Friday). In some busy times it may take us up to 2 weeks to get to your order to the top of the queue and be dispatched. By choosing a priority dispatch option we know that it is important for us to dispatch as soon as possible. Please understand that Priority does not mean that the courier company chosen uses a faster service. It is just that your order is dispatched with the highest priority by our staff.
Express: This is related to the freight service and the time in transit. It is often ( not always ) an overnight service to metro areas. Startrack is a good example of an express service.

Express and Priority: This is the all round fastest choice. It jointly forces your order to be dispatched with Priority and also uses an Express courier company like Startrack.

    PO BOX and PARCEL LOCKERS/COLLECT

If you choose a courier that does not deliver to you an example is Parcel Locker, PO Box or address that this courier does not visit and is returned to us you will need to cover the cost of this freight plus the cost of re-delivery even though the delivery did not arrive at your address. This is another reason why it is so important to only use a courier you know and trust.

Note to Rural and Remote Customers

If you just use the default cheapest courier you might find that your plants are held up in a depot location vastly further away than others. The safest option is to select a courier company that has delivered to you in the past that way you know how they operate and where they leave your parcel. For example you might know that Australia Post leave it at a post office that you visit so it is better to choose them than another courier company you have never used before. Please understand that even though you have entered delivery instructions the courier company may not drive to your rural or remote address and they will likely handle your delivery in the same way they do other deliveries to your address.

How To Choose the Delivery Company

    1. Add plants to your shopping cart.
    2. Enter your postcode and select your suburb.
    3. Under Advanced Freight Options select the appropriate courier. ( See picture below )

    Delivery Instructions:

    ATL: Authority to Leave

We try to get all our couriers to leave the package at your address even if you are not home. This reduces the likelihood of them going back to a depot or post office which increases the time plants remain in boxes. Therefore the Default selection is "ATL - Shade at Front Door" These delivery instructions depend 100% on the driver. If you know a courier company that follows these instructions. You should choose this company rather than risking another courier company you have no experience with.

    Stolen Parcels

If you have ever had parcels stolen at your address. A very large easy to see parcel full of plants unfortunately makes a good target. If this has happened at your front door then you must change these instructions to "Do Not Leave – Get Signature".
Note: If you have given delivery instructions to leave and a picture was taken at your address and it was later stolen. Goods can not be refunded. See Terms and conditions of all sales

Not All Drivers Follow Delivery Instructions

Delivery instructions are not a guarantee that they will be followed because not all delivery drivers read them and sometimes they will choose not to follow them for reasons such as safety. If they are complicated or in a location they will not enter such as the back of a property or through a gate. Then they may be left elsewhere or a card may be left instead. Australia Post for example will commonly leave the parcel at a post office and request that you pick it up especially for rural customers regardless of delivery instructions.  Therefore we ask that you choose the courier that you know and trust rather than the cheapest courier. ( Please read How to Choose the Delivery Company above )

Addresses that can not be found in Google Maps

If your address can not be verified with google maps then the only courier company that we can deliver your order with will be Australia Post.

You can try typing your address into google maps here:

Please note that Australia Post may be more expensive than door to door courier companies and it is the Australia Post rate displayed when you entered your postcode that you will be charged for freight.

When will this Fruit Tree be ready for sale?

With over a thousand different varieties of fruit trees and rainforest plants we can't have them all ready for sale at once. So if you search for a plant not in stock it will now say either

    • In Stock
    • Catalogue Pre Purchase
    • Pre Purchase
    • In Production
    • Seeking Propagation Material

Use My Account to see all your "Notify me when Available" Plants and add or remove them from your list.

    In Stock Plants

These plants have an Add to Cart next to them and the qty available for sale. A good list to see every plant in stock at once is here: All Plants in Stock

    Catalogue Pre Purchase

Important: Make sure you are subscribed to our fruit tree email list to be the first to know when these catalogues are released and therefore have the most amount of plants available for sale.

Often we are asked. "Can I buy all my plants together with 1 freight charge?" The answer is usually no for obvious reasons that plants quickly outgrow their pots making this impossible. However twice a year we release a Pre Purchase catalogue.

Spring Pre Purchase Catalogue: (Release Date: August; Plants sent: Oct/Nov)
Towards the end of Winter usually midway through August. Daleys staff will walk through the nursery and add into stock all the plants that will be available in Spring usually ready by late October to November. So from August to early October you can create an order from a list of plants that are seldom available at one time. In Spring we check your plants that you ordered from this catalogue to see if they are ready to be sent to you with adequate roots and new growth and when all of them are ready we will notify you that your complete order is ready to be sent. This is a once a year opportunity for those wanting many plants together to save on freight and to reserve often hard to get plants that are ready only once a year.

Bare Root Pre Purchase Catalogue  (Release Date: Mid April; Plants sent: June/July)
There are many deciduous fruit trees that are grown in the ground and then dug up when they have no leaves and sent by mail order when they look like sticks with no leaves and no soil on their roots in the cold months of Winter. They are usually sent from late June - July and you can reserve all these plants in the one order from Mid April to June.

    Pre Purchase

(1-6 months) Staff add a small portion of successful plants to be pre sold for those who really want them and are willing to purchase via card or paypal. An example is there may be 100 successful grafted Mango Fruit Trees and perhaps 10 will go onto the Pre Purchase Fruit Tree list. Once the plants are ready for sale these customers get notified that the plant is ready to be sent and after this the other 90 successful plants are then added into stock and customers are notified by Email/SMS with the option to buy them in an orderly fashion. ( Full Pre Purchase FAQ ) (View All Pre Purchase Fruit Trees)

    In Production

(1-12 months) A plant in production is growing at Daleys Nursery and should be ready for sale once it reaches a certain size and health. Depending on the type of plant "In production" may mean this plant has recently been grafted, planted or potted up by a Staff Member. Remember to click on "Notify me by Email/SMS" so that when they are ready you will know. Emails are sent out in batches each night according to who asked to be notified first after they have been added into stock.

    Seeking Propagation Material

(1+ years) We don't have this plant growing in the Nursery but may be sourcing seeds or cuttings to be able to grow them at a later date. For other varieties we purchase them only directly from registered growers in the case of PBR varieties as we can not grow these in our nursery. If a plant is marked as seeking propagation material and you have a tree or seeds please contact us so we can give you instructions on how to get seeds or take cuttings and send them to our nursery if it is a suitable cultivar. We may offer you a voucher from our nursery to compensate you for your time and postage costs to us. Please contact us. Again it is always good to get notified by Email/SMS when just incase we have some luck and have them for sale sooner rather than later.
