Buy Scionwood from Daleys Nursery to Graft in Your Backyard

We have a new list of Scion wood products here at Daleys!

Get notified when our scionwoods are available for sale

Scion wood is the horticultural term for the wood being grafted onto a rootstock, generally rootstocks are seedlings, maybe a year old, and a matching thickness for the scion wood. Scions are collected from a mature branch from the selected variety. Grafting is one technique used to propagate known varieties of fruit and nut trees, the offspring tree will produce fruit that is identical to the parent tree. It will also start to fruit withing 2-3 years, where as seedlings may take up to 8 years to mature to fruiting age.

Scions can also be grafted onto existing mature trees, which gives you the opportunity to create multi-grafts or enrich your pollination potential with a male branch on a female tree.

Our Shoshoni (B) scionwood will be available in August, for example. and can be grafted onto our pecan seedling products, Apache or Riverside, or as a multi-graft onto one of our other varieties. The video linked below shows Kath, our favourite YouTube host, demonstrating how easy it is to create a multi-grafted citrus tree.

All you need to graft your first plants are a sharp grafting knife, some florists tape or parafilm, your rootstock, and your scion wood.

Scion wood will be available to buy soon on our website, with the Shoshoni Pecan wood coming available in August. We have a special discount of 20% for buying 5 or more scions, and we want to encourage everybody to have a go, it's quite addictive once you start. Our other varieties will be coming available soon, so jump over to our website and search the hashtag #ScionWood to see what is on offer. Don't forget to sign up for our notifications so you can be among the first to each variety as they come up, and feel free to drop a comment or message us if you think we need to expand our range or want to recommend anything in particular.

**New** Dwarf RedLove Apple Tree has a STUNNING red coloured flesh. The tree is ready to be mail ordered to your door now while it is dormant. (bare root: It is sent with no soil and no leaves ).

What is more this apple has been developed using all natural cross-pollination techniques just like all the apples we have been enjoying for hundreds of years. Growing Fruit Trees - General Guide

This guide is general in nature but this applies to most of the fruit trees we sell. In order to grow fruit successfully you tree will require the following

  • A full sun position
  • Free draining soil - if you have heavy soil, mound your planting site with compost and good quality garden soil before planting, you can work Gypsum into the hole to break up clay.
  • 6-7 ideal pH for most plants
  • Regular applications of a balanced NPK fertilizer during the growing season as directed, foliar sprays of liquid fertilizer will also be beneficial during the warmer months. Choose an organic fertilizer if you can.
  • Regular and even moisture will result in the best fruit.
  • Maintain a weed free area around your tree
  • Liberally apply compost around your fruit trees and mulch them well with an organic mulch, this can be your own lawn clippings. This will help to retain moisture and reduce weed competition, be sure to keep away from the trunk of your tree.
  • Potted fruit trees will require a pot at least 25- 35 litres in size and always use good quality potting mix in pots, feed and water regularly. Wetting agent can be very helpful to ensure the mix is penetrated.
  • Remove all the flowers from young trees for the first two years so your tree has a chance to establish into a strong and healthy plant before you leave the fruit to mature
  • Maintain all grafted plants by removing any suckers from below the graft as they appear.

Grown By Grafting, Cutting, Seedling, Marcot

Seedling Plant

Seedling
A seed is planted and germinates to grow into a tree. For some plants this is the easiest way to propagate them however there are some draw backs. For example if you plant a seed when the plant finally fruits the taste of the fruit may be nothing like the fruit of parent tree it came from. It will also take longer for a seedling tree to bear fruit than it would for a grafted or cutting grown tree. The pros of a seedling tree is that they have more vigor and are faster and stronger growing than grafted or cutting grown plants, they will also have a much stronger root system which makes them more suitable for marginal climate. For example if you were wanting to grow a longan in Victoria a seedling tree is the best choice for all of these reasons. Seedlings trees will all be genetically different from one another and each tree will be slightly different meaning the fruits your pick off your tree will be unique.A technique called cincturing can also be used to encourage seedling trees to start producing fruit in a shorter time frame than the tree would normally take

A Grafted Plant

A Grafted Plant takes a Scion ( Young shoot ) from a mature tree and then joins this to the rootstock of a seedling plant. This has many advantages. Firstly a rootstock can be selected that is vigorous and disease resistant. Secondly we know the taste and quality of the fruit from the mature tree we took the scion from so we know that when our new grafted tree fruits it will taste the same. Because the tree is mature it also means that the plant will start fruiting straight away or much quicker when compared to a seedling. Grafted plants are more expensive to produce due to the labour involved in propagating them. They also require some degree of maintenance when they are small with particular attention to the suckers that are produced by the more vigorous seedling rootstocks, any shoots that form below the graft need to be removed a process that is called desuckering or they will drain the energy from the graft and if left unchecked they can kill the graft. Because grafted tree do not go through the juvenile phase they tend to be smaller growing than seedling plants and are ideal fro growin in containers where they can be kept as dwarfs or for espalier where pruning and cincturing techniques can be used to keep trees to a compact and manageable size

Cutting Grown Plant

Also known as Striking or Cloning this is is where you take a stem or young shoot from the plant and place it into a soil medium and then under the right conditions this will cause it to produce roots. This method like grafting means that we know the taste of the fruit from this tree. Cuttings grown plants will all be uniform but they can tend to have a weaker root system than seedlings or grafted trees.

Marcotted Grown Plant

Also called Air layering, Marcot, Marcottage and is like a cutting except instead of the roots being formed in a pot inside the soil. It is formed on the branch of the tree inside a plastic bag of soil.
Marcot plants just after harvesting them

Tissue Culture

This is basically making microscopic cuttings. Plant hormones are used to make the cells first divide rapidly and then to differentiate the cells into stem, root and leaf cells. Initially the plant cells need to be grown in sterile conditions to avoid fungus infections, these are called flasks. Once the plantlets have formed roots and shoots they are deflasked into potting media and grown on. Tissue culture is possible because plant cells have the ability to differentiate into different cell types, so the initial cell can turn into leaves, roots and stems forming a whole plant. Tissue cultured plants are genetically true to type and identical to the parent plant and is another form of asexual propagation. It is an excellent method to eliminate viruses from the plants and for this reason it is used for banana propagation.

Rhizomes and Tubers

Plants propagated by rhizomes and tubers are lifted and divided or dug up in the winter when the rhizomes are harvested and replanted. Examples of plants grown in this way are ginger, galangal, arrowroot and asparagus. Rhizomes are typically long term investments and will grow in size, and therefore productivity, with age. Asparagus is, indeed one of these long term investments.
Tubers are neither roots nor rhizomes, but are often found in their company and are, in fact, a growth of reserve nutrients. They are rich in simple carbohydrates (starches) and sugars, which is what makes them so delicious. It is this stored energy that gives them the potential to grow a new plant at a moment’s notice or lay dormant until conditions improve. Sweet potato are an example of a tuber.

Scions

BUY: VIEW ALL SCIONWOODS For Sale

A young piece of wood from a proven quality variety that is grafted onto a rootstock. To purchase this item you need to be competent in grafting.

Scions sold on Daleys Fruit Tree Nursery are rated according to the 3 skill categories below.

Scion Beginner Skill Level

Most people should get success when grafting this scion variety. A practiced grafter should be getting close to 100% success rate.

Scion Intermediate Skill Level

If you have never done a graft before it is best not to start with this variety. However a practiced grafter should be still getting quite good takes. Creating the graft with this variety is often a bit more difficult. You should not be expecting to get 100% takes but 80-95% success rate has been achieved by practiced grafters.

Scion Advanced Skill Level

Only an experienced grafter who has been successful grafting an intermediate scion in the past should attempt to do an advanced scion graft. Even when you are experienced you should be expecting to get 25-75% success rate.

February Newsletter - Exclusion Orchard - Soursop Video

February 2014

The Daley News

Exclusion Orchard

Define Exclusion Orchard: A fully netted orchard where fruit trees can be grown without fruit fly, bats and other pests from damaging the fruit.
Exclusion Orchard
2014 is going to be a memorable year for us all at Daley's Nursery as this is the year that
Fig - brown turkeywe started to reap the rewards from our exclusion orchard.  Since the netting went up around our favourite fruits we can now pick and eat them without any fear of finding grubs and savour the full flavours of freshly picked, tree ripen fruits. We started the year with the best mango season in recent memory which has been closely followed by a bumper fig crop, it is hard to decide which has been a more enjoyable experience.
Mango R2E2If you are considering a mini exclusion orchard there are a few important things to remember, firstly you will need to have pollinators inside your exclusion zone.  We have installed a native bee hive within the orchard and the tiny stingless bees are hard at work on warm sunny days working our flowers and pollinating the fruit for us.  We also have a pair of guinea fowls whose job is to clean up any stray unwanted insects that may happen to enter the orchard. They have raised their first brood of 7 chicks and we are feeling very proud of our success with these shy but interesting birds.
Fruity treats
And secondly pruning is vital to keep all the trees compact, away from the netting and to keep all those delicious fruits within reach.
If you have an exclusion orchard installed at your place we would love to hear from youabout what you grow within and how successful it has been for you and if you are considering a mini exclusion orchard we would also be interested to hear what your plan is.

If you want to grow the soursop fruit tree remember it is classified as a tropical fruit tree however in many subtropical climates where you get very little frost it is possible to grow it in these marginal climates.

Advanced Freight Options: Which Freight Company should you Choose?

Summary of page: Choose the delivery company that you know and trust.
Do you know your courier companies driver?
Is one company quicker or more careful?

The difference between each carrier

Aramex: is usually a good option to urban and built up addresses. But you may be required to pickup from their closest depot if not in their direct delivery zones. This is how they offer a cheaper price. If you have seen their vans in your street this is the positive sign they service your home.
Couriers Please is usually the cheapest option but the delivery can take a little longer. Remote Customers and first time users please be aware: Couriers please often works with Australia post so they will deliver to the closest depot to your address and then they will onforward ( pass it on to ) Australia Post who will then either deliver it to you or leave it in the Australia Post office for you to pick up there. You need to expect this to happen if you have not seen a couriers please van delivery in your area.
Australia Post Is the only courier that allows PO BOX, PARCEL LOCKER, PARCEL COLLECT etc.. Is tried and tested but often leaves plants at their post office regardless of the delivery instructions to leave at your address. It all depends on your local postman if they usually deliver to your home you can expect this parcel to be delivered in the usual way as well. The max parcel size is 90cm so plants are always cut back to this size unlike the other courier companies.
Startrack - is usually more expensive but they do more remote regions. They do however have a close relationship with Australia Post and often use their Post offices.

Which one should you choose

Choose the courier company that you have used before and are happy with their service. If you choose the cheapest one please understand there may be delays especially if you live in a remote area.

Priority and Express Orders

For orders that are urgent we offer 2 services. Priority and/or express. Please understand that these are not overnight services.

Priority: When choosing a Priority service it means that your order goes straight to the front of the queue and is usually dispatched within 1 business day^ (^sometimes more in busy times, ^Dispatch is not done on Friday). In some busy times it may take us up to 2 weeks to get to your order to the top of the queue and be dispatched. By choosing a priority dispatch option we know that it is important for us to dispatch as soon as possible. Please understand that Priority does not mean that the courier company chosen uses a faster service. It is just that your order is dispatched with the highest priority by our staff.
Express: This is related to the freight service and the time in transit. It is often ( not always ) an overnight service to metro areas. Startrack is a good example of an express service.

Express and Priority: This is the all round fastest choice. It jointly forces your order to be dispatched with Priority and also uses an Express courier company like Startrack.

PO BOX and PARCEL LOCKERS/COLLECT

If you choose a courier that does not deliver to you an example is Parcel Locker, PO Box or address that this courier does not visit and is returned to us you will need to cover the cost of this freight plus the cost of re-delivery even though the delivery did not arrive at your address. This is another reason why it is so important to only use a courier you know and trust.

Note to Rural and Remote Customers

If you just use the default cheapest courier you might find that your plants are held up in a depot location vastly further away than others. The safest option is to select a courier company that has delivered to you in the past that way you know how they operate and where they leave your parcel. For example you might know that Australia Post leave it at a post office that you visit so it is better to choose them than another courier company you have never used before. Please understand that even though you have entered delivery instructions the courier company may not drive to your rural or remote address and they will likely handle your delivery in the same way they do other deliveries to your address.

How To Choose the Delivery Company

1. Add plants to your shopping cart.
2. Enter your postcode and select your suburb.
3. Under Advanced Freight Options select the appropriate courier. ( See picture below )

Delivery Instructions:

ATL: Authority to Leave

We try to get all our couriers to leave the package at your address even if you are not home. This reduces the likelihood of them going back to a depot or post office which increases the time plants remain in boxes. Therefore the Default selection is "ATL - Shade at Front Door" These delivery instructions depend 100% on the driver. If you know a courier company that follows these instructions. You should choose this company rather than risking another courier company you have no experience with.

Stolen Parcels

If you have ever had parcels stolen at your address. A very large easy to see parcel full of plants unfortunately makes a good target. If this has happened at your front door then you must change these instructions to "Do Not Leave – Get Signature".
Note: If you have given delivery instructions to leave and a picture was taken at your address and it was later stolen. Goods can not be refunded. See Terms and conditions of all sales

Not All Drivers Follow Delivery Instructions

Delivery instructions are not a guarantee that they will be followed because not all delivery drivers read them and sometimes they will choose not to follow them for reasons such as safety. If they are complicated or in a location they will not enter such as the back of a property or through a gate. Then they may be left elsewhere or a card may be left instead. Australia Post for example will commonly leave the parcel at a post office and request that you pick it up especially for rural customers regardless of delivery instructions.  Therefore we ask that you choose the courier that you know and trust rather than the cheapest courier. ( Please read How to Choose the Delivery Company above )

Addresses that can not be found in Google Maps

If your address can not be verified with google maps then the only courier company that we can deliver your order with will be Australia Post.

You can try typing your address into google maps here:

Please note that Australia Post may be more expensive than door to door courier companies and it is the Australia Post rate displayed when you entered your postcode that you will be charged for freight.

Northern Territory - Mail Order Fruit Trees

People who live in the Northern Territory can now choose from our NT Plant List and have them sent to your door. This will happen about 5 times a year so you can place and add to your order at any time until the dispatch date.

Unfortunately there is an extra cost for quarantine as we need to pay for a quarantine inspector to come and check your plants before they are dispatched. This costs starts at $25 per order and goes up depending on how many extra plants you have placed. So to make the order economical you would likely need to order $100 or more worth of plants.
