Broad Leaf Papaya - Name does it justice

Shows the Fruit of the broad Leaf Papaya

The very large leaf in-front of a fruiting broad leaf papaya tree

The Broad leaf papaya with daleys staff in-front for perspective

Broad Leaf Papaya. The name does it justice. The enormous yet delicate leaves look to be floating in the air and bounce around with the slightest of touch. They are a self pollinating papaya and can fruit within 2-3 years. A real stand out from the papaya varieties. #daleysfruit #broadleafpapaya #papaya #pawpaw #fruittrees

Mexican Custard Apple Fruit Trees

Mexican Custard Apple split in half

Notice the coloured skin of the Mexican custard apple

These photos were taken last month of our Mexican custard apple Fruit Trees. Notice their coloured skin and creamy/white sweet flesh. They are in the same family as normal custard apples and cherimoyas. During mail order to your home they are quite sensitive and their leaves yellow and some fall off. However once settled this quickly reverses and are quite a hardy tree long term. Trees can get quite large and they take about 5 years before fruiting. They do only need 1 tree to set fruit. #mexicanCustardApple #daleysfruit #fruittrees

Starling White Guava Fruit Tree with few seeds (Less than normal)

Starling White Guava Fruit Tree

Some people don't like guavas because of their hard seeds. This variety is the starling white guava fruit tree and if you were to grow just this guava and your neighbours nearby didn't have a guava then you should get even fewer seeds forming than in this picture. This is due to no cross pollination. We have lots of guavas growing at Daleys and in this photo there isn't as many seeds as the usual white guava varieties. So we would expect some of our customers in the above scenario to produce guavas with far less seeds than us when growing the starling white guava. Taste is still very sweet and the fruits grow quite large with white flesh and green skin that goes more yellow and fragrant and soft when ripening. They do like warmer climates and could be kept small in a pot. Which makes them easier to protect with netting.

How to Grow Vanilla Vines in 3 Years

Rambutan Fruit Trees - Fruit Forest Farm

A lot goes into the perfect Rambutans Fruit Tree. Just like Apple Trees there are many different varieties and finding the best one is what Peter Salleras has an eye for.

On our trip to Far North Queensland we visited Fruit Forest Farm (Taste and Tour the Tropics)

10/10 for excitement and awe. Then there is the taste.

Red ilama - Strawberry Taste, Custard Apple texture with Steve Trenerry

The Annona Diversifolia or common name Red ilama is one for backyards because they need to be picked after the split but before they drop to the ground and shatter. The Texture, colour and taste will have you in awe. We shared this experience and learnt from Steve Trenerry a very active passionate fruit tree collector.

Please Note: This is not currently available from Daleys Fruit Tree Nursery but may be in the future if trials are successful in our subtropical climate.

Christmas Cherries in Warm Climates

It's the silly season, the stores are full of Christmas cheer, and there are bright red cherries on every cake. No fruit cake is finished without the cherry on top, right? So how do we get our cherry fix here in warm temperate NSW?
Growing Tropical Cherries when you're in a warmer climate.

An Acerola Cherry fruit tree has beautifully open, dichotomous branching pattern lends itself well to holiday decorations, not that it needs it while it's shiny baubles ripen at the perfect time of year. Approximately the size of a cherry, the fruit has a single seed and tastes remarkably similar to their cold climate relatives.

Fruit Forest Farm Visit

Pics above
Cupuassu, Related to cacao, the cupuassu is popular in its native Brazil, but little know elsewhere. Unlike cacao, the pulp of the large-fruited cupuassu is used rather than the seeds. Unique flavour with hint of Pineapple

Tatura Trellis - cyclone proof trees, framework for netting and also training limbs to be more fruitful

Carters Red Pomelo

Cacao fruit - flesh around beans (that are used to make chocolate) taste like mangosteen and Soursop.

Canistel dip - great way to use this fruit. Just mix with Lime and Chili. So tasty!!

One of Peters Crisp Orange Jackfruit selections ‘Berry’ superb flavour.

Todays visit to Peter and Alison Salleras Fruit Forest Farm was awesome. Their passion in trialing and growing commercially a large range of exotic tropical fruits was so inspiring. After experiencing the full fury of Category 5 Cyclone Yasi in 2011 Peter and Allison were not deterred but actually inspired to future proof their orchard by establishing all new planting’s using Tatura trellessing. We were at the tail end of the wet season fruiting, but still managed to taste amazing Soursops, Durian, Jackfruit, Rollinia, Mangosteen, Breadfruit, Cacao, Black Sapote, Breadnut, Cupuassu, Pomelo and Canistel. It was great to finally meet the Salleras’ that I have heard so much about. They are so generous with their knowledge and their lifetime dedication to trialing and implementing new ways of growing Tropical fruits is so inspiring. If you are ever visiting North Qld you have to book into one of their Saturday afternoon Farm Tours.

Jucara Fruiting Palm Tree for Sale (Euterpe edulis)

Buy Jucara Palm Tree

The Jucara Palm (Euterpe edulis) is a very close relative of the Acai Palm which everybody knows about thanks to these Acai bowls. The Acai palm is quite tropical so often dismissed as a plant to grow by many Australians but the Jucara Palm is a close relative that can be grown into the subtropics and the fruit is quite similar and can be used to make the pulp for these lovely smoothie bowls or juiced. Jucara is also preferred for harvesting a high quality "Palm Heart" which is used as an ingredient in steamed vegetables.

Soursop Fruit Drink and Frozen Soursop Pulp

We often get asked where can I get soursop the fruit from? @daleysfruit we only sell the plants which isn't helpful to those who want the fruit asap so we often say best to try Tropical Fruit World where their amazing shop sells them at the right time of year. Today while visiting a Greek/South American, Italian grocer I found a soursop fruit nectar fruit drink $2.25 and 500g of frozen soursop flesh for $8.90 in their freezer and fridge sections. Fruit Drink was very thick with #passionfruit #mango and slight milky flavours. So worth asking your local specialty supermarkets if you can't visit tropical fruit world for the real thing. Wood Apple Fruit Trees

Wood Apple Fruit Tree vs Avocado
Wood Apples are everywhere In Sri Lanka and the fruit is often made into juices. Tasting sweet yet with a citrus acidic flavour and a very fragrant smell when ripe. Not very pretty to look at but then again either are black sapotes. Looks aren't everything when it comes to fruit. We do not grow wood apples at Daleys Fruit Tree Nursery but maybe...one day. We are getting much more adventurous in Australia aren't we :)

Growing Cashew Nut Fruit Trees in the Subtropicas ( For Sale )

Buy Cashew Nut Fruit Trees
Cashew Nut Trees fruiting at John Picones exotic fruit orchard. The Juice is delicious. Recovering the Nut from shell is a bit tedious. This is being grown in the subtropics inland from Byron Bay even though they are recommended for the tropics but with the heat perhaps it will be much easier to grow more tropical plants further south. Has anybody had success fruiting cashews further south in Australia?

Transcript from Papaya Broad Leaf
Now look at this beautiful thing. This is what we call a broad leaf papaya and it's name for these really beautiful large leaves. They get bigger than this so this is just a modest example of the leaves and it's quite a spectacular looking plant and it has these really lovely torpedo shaped red fruits which like other red papayas are really delicious great in fruit salads, great eaten fresh just as they are, so this is perfect and we're going to take it back to the kitchen and cut it up and show you what it looks like inside. So if you wanna grow one of these in your garden what do you need. Well firstly you need a warm, really well drained position so they like a nice sunny spot but they also like protection from extremes so extreme, hot afternoon sun, windy conditions they're not going to like. So if you can give them a nice sheltered protected spot and perfect drainage, mound up your planting site to improve your drainage and you can also plant them up against a wall which will give them a bit of reflective heat if you are in a  cool climate like down near Sydney. Ideally they are going to like a subtropical or tropical climate they are going to thrive and you'll be picking these beautiful fruits in about 18 months.

Buy Carambola Kembangan star Fruit Trees

Carambola Kembangan Star Fruit Tree

Star Fruit Tree Kembangan

I can vouch for the amazing taste of this grafted star fruit variety called Kembangan. Juicy to the extreme and such a strong full flavour. I have had some very special moments under Kembangan star fruit tree. Promoted as "dessert quality with few seeds" The tree crops by itself but also benefits when you have a few different carambola star fruits around. Easily kept human height in pots or in the ground via pruning & cincturing otherwise it will grow about 3-5m tall. Sensitive to frosts when young and always a good idea to net the tree before the fruit turns from green to this striking orange/yellow/star colour.
We have 44 baby Kembangans looking to move into backyards in Australia.

Video Canistel Fruit Tree - Grafted Emma

Canistel Fruit Trees once established can survive some very nasty frosts as this one did about 6 years ago. They are a wonderful looking tree that produces hard boiled egg tasting fruit. So good that we even find a white headed pigeon inside our Emma Canistel Fruit Tree.

Transcript of Canistel Fruit Tree Grafted Emma

Now this lovely fruit is the Emma Canistel.
and I love the Canistel they have really grown on me over the years.
They also call them the Yellow Sapote and they have a very rich, sweet flesh that has the colour and texture of hard boiled egg yolks they are quite unusual the first time you try them. The Emma is a great variety because it is bite sized. So it is quite a small fruit and it's really a lovely sized fruit you can eat the whole thing in one go.
So this one is going to have to wait for about a week until it goes very soft it will start to split and that is when it's ready to eat.
So you can't eat it straight away off the tree unless it falls.
Now this particular tree has had quite a hard life and it went through a very heavy frost down to about -6, -7 which did damage it significantly but you can see how well it's come back so that was about 7 years ago and we cut it right back to remove the dead wood from it once the frosts had finished and then it re-grew so we have had no trouble with this plant at all.
To keep it small now days we are using our dwarfing
So we are girdling this plant or cincturing it
and what that does is it keeps it nice and compact
so it reduces the sap flow and the vigor of the plant and it also encourages flowering and fruiting so we get more fruit on our Emma canistel.
We also in this tree in this season have the nest of a white headed pigeon so that's actually quite a nice addition as well and she's just quietly sitting on her eggs at the moment. You might be able to have a little peak and see her in there.
