This is quite a good display of red streaks for the Norther NSW area. But we're sure that some southerners get even more red coming through. The red colour comes from anthocyanin which is the same plant compound that gives Pomegranates.

Newly formed Aerial roots on a Dragon Fruit Vine can be seen in the 1st picture. Dragon fruit originally used aerial roots to seek out light and create a path to the very top of the jungle canopy. Absorbing nutrients too. Usually they won't fruit until they accomplish this goal. They then hang back down and start fruiting having won the fight for light. 

 But in your backyard aerial roots can be used to attach themselves to a thick strong trellis, fence or old tree stump. The more sturdy the more fruit can be supported. Unlike in the jungle you want them to fruit at 2m high. So make sure that they quickly win the fight for light and can then start fruiting for you straight away rather than after they put all their effort into growing up a 10m tree first.

These photos were taken last month of our Mexican custard apple Fruit Trees. Notice their coloured skin and creamy/white sweet flesh. They are in the same family as normal custard apples and cherimoyas. During mail order to your home they are quite sensitive and their leaves yellow and some fall off. However once settled this quickly reverses and are quite a hardy tree long term. Trees can get quite large and they take about 5 years before fruiting. What method's best? Experiment: Ripening Mangos off the tree

Part Time Work 2 days Dispatch and Packing Plants in Kyogle

We are an online fruit tree nursery that mail orders 1000's of fruit trees across Australia. The job would include permanent part time hours 9-3pm ( school hours ) 2 days per week or 7.30-4pm if that suits. Due to demand we may require you to be flexible for an extra 2 days per week.

The job can be fast paced with deadlines to meet as trucks come throughout the day to pick up plants that you have packed and prepared for customers all around Australia. We would require you to work in the sun to select plants with sun protective clothing. However most of the work is in a shaded dispatch shed where all the plants are packed.

An appreciation of plants is helpful and so is an existing knowledge of warehouse procedures including packing boxes with fast hand eye co-ordination. A minor mistake with the wrong label or plant can cause big problems down the line so an attention to detail or pride in your work is something that you need to bring to work with you.

Tasks are allocated to each staff member via their personal smartphone. You need to own a smartphone under 5 years old and be willing to use it in the workplace. The phone is required to view tasks, complete them and provide feedback on jobs assigned to you. A pre existing understanding of the way apps and webpages work to collect data is a big part of this role.

It is preferable that you live within 40km's of Kyogle NSW because being flexible and on call when we get a surge in orders to meet our customers expectations is important to us. Days and hours can be flexible so if you had other commitments due to children or community work we are happy to work with you.

Our most important policy is contributing to a positive team dynamics.

Not a True Lemon, But does it matter? (Meyer Lemons)

Not a True Lemon. But does it matter? 

 The Meyer Lemon tree is the most popular backyard lemon tree in Australia but they are not a "True" Lemon. That is because they are a cross (hybrid) between a lemon and an orange. Although not as acidic as a true lemon like a Eureka lemon tree or Lisbon Lemon Tree they are the perfect acidity for salads and many other dishes without being too harsh on your teeth/pallet or requiring too much salt to balance out the sour. Meyer lemon trees are more cold hardy while performing well into warmer subtropical climates. So you can see them into Melbourne and up into QLD. Also you can get a great crop of lemons often all year round. Not many fruit have this talent. 

Backyard Tips: 

Pruning: Each time you pick a lemon prune away any crowded stems. Mulch: Thick mulch to keep water in but have a separation from the trunk. 

Soil: Free draining ( You accomplish this by planting it on a mound) 

Fertiliser: Slow release Spring and again in Summer. 

Watering: Deep watering in the hotter months rather than constant shallow watering. 

Eco Oil: To stop leaf curl.

Chill hours are "very loosely" defined as the number of hours below 7 degrees you get in Winter.

If lots of people comment from the same area as you, Then you can use the maths of averaging to get a more accurate picture where you live (Great for beginners) so please all you old hands help out.

What happens if you get it Wrong?
**Too low** - eg. 200 chill hours (Low Chill location)
Answer: Worst scenario is when this plant is deciduous (no leaves) in winter. The fruit tree would think it hasn't got enough chill and may never break dormancy (grow leaves again). Otherwise it may wait too long even into summer to break dormancy and may also die out. Best scenario is where some varieties handle the wrong chill hours very well and may break dormancy and fruit but are likely to do this at unexpected times. Found out by Trial and Error.

**Too High** - eg. 800 chill hours (High Chill location)
Answer: Worst case scenario is during winter you may get 1 hotter than normal day. Since the chill hour requirement has been met it will think it's time to break dormancy. As soon as it does the temperature drops again and the leaves drop and the tree may die this way. Again some varieties handle this better than others and you need to find this out by Trial and error. 

Microclimates and Chill Hours: Just because you live in Melbourne doesn't mean you are high chill and just because you live on the QLD sunshine coast doesn't mean you are low/no chill. We don't mean that some parts of Melbourne have a tropical climate but you may live in a bizarre microclimate location where hot air rushes up early morning and the opposite may be the case in the QLD sunshine coast where you may live in a cold pocket allowing you to grow plants with chill requirements.
